The expectation that Summer should be relaxing and carefree can put pressure on people which can negatively impact on wellbeing. Summer can also wear our bodies down physically and cause sleeplessness, lethargy, dehydration and a lack of appetite which can make you feel more anxious and irritable. The changes in routine that summer breaks cause can negatively impact mood.

Here are some top tips to help you look after your wellbeing this summer:

  • Plan a warm day routine considering advice around staying out of the sun during the hottest period of the day being between 11am and 3pm.
  • Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day and eat well.
  • Protect your skin by wearing sunscreen with high SPF and use hats and sunglasses to shield you from the sunlight. Reapply suncream regularly especially if outside for long periods of time or are in the water swimming.
  • Practice sun safety to prevent heat related illnesses. Stay in shaded areas and make use of umbrellas or canopies in peak hours of sunshine. Lisen to your body and take breaks from the sunshine.
  • Keep cool by: keeping your windows shut during the day and closing your blinds and curtains to keep the heat out. Open your windows at night to let cooler air in. Take regular cool showers or baths to lower your core temperature.
  • Get outside in nature during the cooler parts of the day to help you relax and appreciate your surroundings. Light exercise can also be great for boosting your mood. You could try doing mindfulness or meditation activities outdoors to release stress. Organise social gatherings with family and friends outside and bring your workplace outside through walks and lunches.
  • Practice mindfulness through finding moments to relax and allowing yourself to enjoy the moment and the beauty around you.
  • Organise social gatherings to connect with others, ideas include picnics and barbecues.
