Working out outdoors in the winter can feel daunting but it has increased benefits including boosts in cardiovascular health and endurance. Being outdoors in natural light will also help boost our mood. See the tips below to help guide you on how to exercise outdoors this winter.
- Dress in warm clothes and layer up to keep the warmth in but make sure you can take them off easily enough. Start with a thin based layer, add middle layer for warmth then outer layer to protect you from the elements. Use synthetic materials to help keep you dry.
- Avoid certain conditions and observe safety. Avoid steep pavements with an increased risk of slipping/sliding. You should opt for brighter colours to increase visibility to other road users.
- Warm up- cold weather requires a longer warm up, look to replicate the movements you are about to perform at a lower intensity. Warm ups should be dynamic to help prepare the muscles for exercise and prevent injury/muscle soreness.
- Exercise with a group due to the benefits we have previously discussed including increased enjoyment, motivation and accountability. Discover more about this here-
- Stay hydrated- even though you may not feel the need to as much as in the heat of the summer you still need to drink to stay hydrated to prevent headaches and keep energy levels up. This is important as your body loses water from the heat generated from exercising, you could use warm water or flavoured beverages if that helps.
