Here are some tips on how you can start to be active:
- Set a goal and add it to your calendar/schedule so you can commit your time to it. Think about your schedule and where you can fit in exercise then schedule it into your calendar, setting reminders can also help. It is also a good idea to make the goals more specific- walking to work 3 times a week.
- Start slowly and add more activity in gradually, for example use the starting point of 10 minutes exercise and then add 5 minutes week by week untill you are active most days for about 30 minutes.
How can I stay motivated to stay active:
- Scheduling to be active with friends, family or colleagues can work well as it makes physical activity something you look forward to. Plan fun physical activities that allow you to spend quality time together and stay on track with your goals. Seek support from people who will help you on your physical activity journey.
- Join an exercise class or club at a local leisure centre or gym or you can join free running or walking groups.
- Try different activities you think you might like as you are more likely to stay active if you choose activities you enjoy.
- I don’t have time- do 10 minutes of activity at a time or make activity part of your daily routine by walking to work/school.
- Switch it up- try out new activities when your motivation starts to drop
- The weather is awful- try exercising at home using the resources highlighted in the exercise at home post – https://employeewellbeing.scci.org.uk/how-to-move-more-at-home/
- It will cost too much- lots of the resources we have highlighted in the physical wellbeing section are free! Check out your local community spaces including parks and community centres.
